Commissioner Boyd Wants To Use $500,000 In Hotel/Motel Funds For Creative Discovery Museum's $10 Million Capital Campaign

  • Wednesday, February 5, 2020

County Commissioner Tim Boyd said he will ask the commission to authorize $500,000 of hotel/motel funds to aid in a $10 million capital campaign by the Children's Discovery Museum.

He said, "This type of project is exactly what the hotel/motel fund was set up for."

However, he noted that an earlier commission "allotted 100 percent of the funds to the Convention Bureau."

Commissioner Boyd said a consultant computed that the project would double the current $13 million annual economic benefit from the museum at Fourth and Chestnut from $13 million to $26 million. He said it would add 96 permanent jobs from the current 162.

He said the commission earlier allotted $250,000 to the new Medal of Honor museum, and that came from hotel/motel funds.
