Betty Abercrombie
Betty Abercrombie, a longtime Hamilton County resident and educator passed away at her home Saturday March 14, 2020.
Mrs. Abercrombie was born to the late Ethredge and Helen Cargo in Hanceville, Al., where she spent her childhood and teenage years. Betty earned both undergraduate and a master’s degree in Education. She taught elementary school for over 30 years – her time spent at DuPont Elementary and Big Ridge Elementary schools.
As an educator, Betty was a member of professional education organizations including the Retired Teachers Association. In addition, she was a member of Tennessee Alpha Delta Kappa, Chi Chapter for outstanding women in education.
For over 50 years, Betty was an actively involved member of Red Bank Baptist Church and spent time enjoying and helping lead the Hall Sunday School Class and Senior Adult Programs.
Betty was preceded in death by her loving husband of 65 years, Wayne Abercrombie. She is survived by her daughter Charlotte Mabry (Steve), grandchildren, Stephen Mabry (Rachel) and Dina Raquel Mabry, great-grandchildren Olivia, Andrew and Evan Mabry and her sister Sarah Mobbs (Vernon).
The family wishes to thank Hospice of Chattanooga’s Dayton office for all the help and guidance. In addition, Susan Gooden and her staff have been a source of comfort and strength and this path could not have been walked without them. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Red Bank Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, March 17, from 1-3 p.m. with service to follow at 3 p.m. in the Chattanooga Funeral Home chapel at 5401 Highway 153, Hixson. Interment will be in the Hamilton Memorial Gardens.
Arrangements are under the care of the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory and Florist, 5401 Highway 153, Hixson.
