Community Groups Collaborate To Serve Chattanooga's Elders

  • Thursday, August 20, 2020

Deacon Homes is announcing a new initiative to help bring resiliency focused senior living to underserved elders in the Chattanooga area, as they develop a collaboration with Summit View Senior Community.

Deacon Homes has a community history of matching needed resources for elders in the Chattanooga area to be able to live with dignity and purpose.  Summit View Senior Community has a 17-year history of providing independent and assisted living in a way that helps older adults bounce back from infirmities, build close friendships, and find meaning and purpose as they enjoy life in a protected setting surrounded by natural beauty, said officials.

Summit View President Melanie Adair said, “Many elders in the Chattanooga community depend exclusively on limited Social Security and Medicare for daily living.  The Deacon Homes initiative will help make needed senior living services feasible for many elders.”

The collaboration of these two not-for-profit organizations will be directed at helping those who worked to make Chattanooga a special place to live, including veterans, teachers, salespeople, cooks, firefighters, mechanics, nurses, and others, who have ended up having very limited retirement funds available.

“Our seniors are feeling a financial burden of paying for day-to-day necessities now more than ever," said Reverend John Rouser with Deacon Homes. "Often times they are forced to make the hard decision between rent, food, medication, and care. With the continuation of the COVID-19 crisis, Deacon Homes is receiving a large number of requests for supplemental financial assistance for housing, care, nutrition, and medication.  We are thrilled to be able to work with Summit View on this effort, as they have a long history of being excellent stewards of elders’ resources.  Both groups are committed to caring for those who once cared for us.  It is our highest calling.”

To support this effort, Deacon Homes is launching a new initiative, the Adopt-a-Grandparent Campaign.  Monies raised will be designated to provide supplemental assistance for seniors in the Chattanooga area.

“Often, a little monthly help can make a significant difference in the lives of elders struggling to make ends meet,” said Reverend Rouser. “It is always fulfilling to know you are making a positive difference in the lives of others.”

The Adopt-a-Grandparent Program will enable donors to support an elder’s ability to live out their lives with dignity and purpose, as residents enjoying the resources and support of Summit View Senior Community.
