Chattanooga's Redman Named SoCon Volleyball Player Of The Week

  • Monday, September 18, 2023
Setter Elaine Redman was recognized once again for her efforts on the court for UTC volleyball this past week, as the junior brought home Southern Conference Setter of the Week honors, the league office announced on Monday.

Redman has now grabbed her second career SoCon Setter of the Week accolade, having been awarded her first earlier in the 2023 season. Redman guided the Mocs to a 3-1 record this past week, including helping UTC claim the title at the team’s home tournament, the Chattanooga Classic.
The Mocs now hold a record of 11-3 on the season with Southern Conference action set to kick off this coming weekend.

Redman is joined by Samford’s Gracie Lynn Butler and Wofford’s Abbey Richman, who were honored as the conference’s Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week.

The Chattanooga, Tennessee, native Redman opened her dominant week for the Mocs by dropping a 41 assist, 15 dig double-double in the team’s 3-1 victory over Jacksonville State on the road on Tuesday. She followed this performance up by opening the Chattanooga Classic with 33 assists, five digs, three blocks and three kills in the Mocs’ 3-0 sweep of Eastern Michigan.

Redman went on to log her seventh double-double of the year in the team’s 3-0 win over Morehead State (34 assists, 12 digs), matching the most double-doubles she’s had in a single season in her career. The junior then closed out her weekend with 47 assists in UTC’s tournament finale against Gardner-Webb, which stands as the second-highest assist total she’s put up in a match this season.

In total, Redman ended her week with 155 assists, 37 digs, eight kills, seven blocks and four aces in UTC’s four-match slate for the week. Redman averaged 38.75 assists per match, 10.33 assists per set, 9.25 digs per match and 2.47 digs per set, along with averaging 1.75 blocks per match for the Mocs.

She has now logged 30+ assists in 10 of the team’s 14 matches this season, having done so in each of the team’s past four matches. Redman also surpassed 40+ assists two times this past week, as she has now exceeded the 40-assist mark six times this season.

Redman and the rest of the Chattanooga volleyball squad return to action this weekend with a pair of home matches to kick off the Southern Conference season. The Mocs will first meet with undefeated The Citadel (12-0) at 6 p.m. ET on Friday, September 22 before playing host to Wofford (9-2) on Saturday, September 23 at 4 p.m. ET. Both matches will be played at Maclellan Gym, are free to the public, and will be available to stream on ESPN+.

The 2023 season for the Chattanooga Mocs volleyball team marks a major landmark for the program and the university, as UTC volleyball officially celebrates its 50th season of competition as a university sponsored athletic program. Following the adoption of the Title IX legislation back in 1972, UTC added women’s basketball, tennis, and volleyball programs to its roster of athletic teams, bringing on five decades of history for each of the teams. UTC volleyball will be holding a celebration of the team’s 50 seasons of history during the team’s pair of home matches October 6 and 7 during Homecoming Weekend.
