Fleming Cannon
Fleming Vaughn Cannon, Jr., of Flintstone, died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2003, at a local hospital following a long illness.
He was a native of Parkersburg, W.V. and lived in Huntsville, Ala. before moving to the North Georgia area in 1973.
Mr. Cannon was a design engineer with the United States Space Program and worked extensively on the Skylab telescopic wings. He came to the Chattanooga area where he was employed as an engineer by Ernest Holmes Division of Dover Corporation and Century Wrecker/Miller Industries where he designed towing and recovery equipment. After retiring from Miller Industries, Mr. Cannon worked for Image Illustrations until health problems forced him to quit.
He was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in the Korean War where he was a topographical engineer and received a Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and a Good Conduct Medal.
Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Kaye Lewis Cannon; daughter and son-in-law, Kei and Pete Petersen, Flintstone; son and daughter-in-law, Todd and Donni Cannon, Chattanooga; grandchildren, Nathan Hampton, Flintstone, Ian Vaughn Cannon, Sydney and Paul McKee, all of Chattanooga; sisters and brother-in-law, Rosalind and Jack Hansford, Marietta, Betty Jones, Knoxville; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at noon on Friday at the South Crest Chapel with Father Stephen Askew officiating.
Burial will follow in National Cemetery.
Visitation is from 2–4 and 6-9 p.m. Thursday at the South Crest Chapel of Lane Funeral Home.
