Betty Barrett

Betty Ann Hixson Barrett died on April 18, 2009 at Memorial Hospital in Chattanooga.

She was born February 27, 1927 at Bertrand, Mo. After her mother died in 1929, she was raised by her Aunt Hallie and Uncle Dan Hamill in Hixson, where she spent most of the rest of her life. She was proud to be a descendent of the Hixsons who helped settle that part of Hamilton County.

She was a graduate of Berea College. Trained as a teacher, she taught fifth grade for several years at Lupton City and Ganns-Middle Valley Schools.

She was married to Stanton H. Barrett Jr., for over 36 years prior to his death in 1987. She dedicated herself to the upbringing and education of her four children, and later to the nurture of her five grandchildren.

She passed on her lifelong love of learning to her family and to many others through her stewardship of the library at the Second Presbyterian Church, where she was an active member from the time of her marriage.

She cared deeply about her community, shown notably in her participation in the Guardians of North Chickamauga Creek, and in the campaign to retain the traditional name for the Hixson Post Office.

She was an avid follower of politics at the national level, and an active member of the local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

She was predeceased by her parents Willie and Bernard Evans Hixson, husband, Stanton H. Barrett Jr., and siblings, B.E. Hixson, Francis Couch, and Nota Lassiter.

She is survived by her children, Elizabeth Barrett Cobb (Christopher) of Chattanooga, Catherine Barrett Flores, M.D., (Javier) of Yukon, Ok., Daniel Hixson Barrett of Chattanooga, and the Rev. Stanton H. Barrett III (Leslie) of Ipswich, Ma.; grandchildren, Michael, Laura, and Maggie Flores of Yukon, Ok., and Megan and Jordan Cobb of Chattanooga; siblings, Ida Mae Smith of Colorado, J.T. Hixson of California, and Ralph Hixson of Chattanooga; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, at Second Presbyterian Church, 7th and Pine. Interment will follow in Hixson Cemetery.

Those wishing to make a donation in lieu of flowers, are invited to contribute to the library fund at Second Presbyterian Church.
