Charles Otto Scherzer, 89, of Hixson, died on Monday, October 21, 2013. 

Mr. Scherzer was a deacon at First Presbyterian Church and a member of the Lee Ander’s Sunday School Class. He was born on January 14, 1924 in Flushing, N.Y., and attended grammar and high school in Farmingdale, Long Island. Charley left Hofstra University to enlist in the U.S. Navy. He graduated from Officers Candidate School and received his wings in 1944 at Pensacola Naval Air Station. He served his country in World War II and the Korean War as a fighter pilot on three aircraft carriers in the Mediterranean and Asiatic –Pacific Theatres. Mr. Scherzer worked in management in the commercial glass industry for 33 years, retiring from Binswanger Glass Company as Contract Manager of the Chattanooga Branch.

Charley was preceded in death by his parents, Felix Otto and Charlotte Koster Scherzer; wife of 68 years, Helen Kammer Scherzer; sisters, Charlotte Flanagan and Ann Bultmann.

Charley is survived by his son, Charles O. Scherzer II; grandson, Michael (Daphne) Scherzer; granddaughter, Joelly (Peter) Belman; great-grandsons, Mac and Thomas Scherzer and Jack Belman; great-granddaughters, Jordan Scherzer and Katie Belman and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held on Monday, Oct. 28, at 11:30 a.m. at Chattanooga National Cemetery with Reverend Chris Ehlers officiating and full military honors. There will be no visitation.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to First Presbyterian Church, 554 McCallie Ave, Chattanooga, TN 37402.
