7 Baylor Students Earn National Merit Commended Honors

  • Monday, September 30, 2013

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced that seven academically talented Baylor seniors have been named commended students in the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program. A letter of commendation from the school and the NMSC was presented to Hayden Longley, Jordan McGuffee, Alec Parten, Ben Pettway, Ryan Shearouse, Will Thomas and Mike Thompson.

The commended students, cited for “exceptional academic promise,” placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2014 competition by taking the 2012 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

Earlier this month Baylor announced that it also had eight students qualify as National Merit Semifinalists.

“The young men and women named commended students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success,” said an NMSC spokesperson. “These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation.”
