Loving The Chattanooga Railroad Series - And Response

  • Sunday, December 28, 2014
John Wilson's series on railroads in and around Chattanooga made my 2014 Top 10 list for interesting reading. I had known we were a railroad hub, but I didn't realize how many different rail lines have operated here over the years.

My first favorite article focused on the pre-Civil War railroad tunnel through Missionary Ridge in East Chattanooga. This is the tunnel you go through on many of the excursions of the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum.

Recently, the series allowed us to explore vicariously the remaining vestiges of the unfinished line to Stevenson, Ala. The Marion County portion of this doomed line is often referred to almost reverently as the "Old Southern Grade."

Here's hoping that this series turns into a book.
