Elysie Arnold
Elysie Cheek Arnold died peacefully Tuesday evening, April 22, 2014 surrounded by family and loved ones.  She was 99.

She was born in Burlington, N.C., on Aug. 13, 1914 to John and Bess Satterfield Cheek.

Elysie married Carl Arnold in New York at the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church in 1943 where he was stationed in the Navy.  She became a stay-at-home mom spending her life taking care of her family and friends.  She was active in the Girl Scouts while their daughter, Carleen, was growing up and for many years was a mentor for the contestants in the Junior Miss Program.

She was a dedicated member of the First Centenary United Methodist Church and a member of the Altar Guild where she prepared the sanctuary for the second service until age 94.

Elysie was a “people person.”  She knew the employees at the service station, the grocery store, the country club, the branch bank and they knew her.  One Christmas she delivered 20 boxes of clementines to her branch bank for all the staff.

She was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters, John W. Cheek, Murray A. Cheek, Ann M. Jones and Louise E. Cheek; nieces Elizabeth B. Akers and Billie M. Noel.

Survivors include her husband of 71 years, Carl J. Arnold, daughter, Carleen A. Wesson (Richard H. Wesson) of Marietta, Ga., granddaughter, Laura Hill (Mark Hill) of Lake Hartwell, S.C.; nephews, Richard J. Cheek, Jack L. Cheek, Wilkie M. Cheek, James A. Cheek, and nieces, Jeannie C. Bray, Becky Cheek, Lisa Cheek, Amaryllis M. Van Hoy, and Mona M. Glover.

Funeral services will be held at 1:45 p.m. on Monday, April 28, at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, 404 South Moore Road, East Ridge, Tn. 37412.  Visitation prior to the service will begin at noon.

Interment will follow the service at the Chattanooga National Cemetery, 1200 Bailey Ave., Chattanooga, Tn. 37404.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Centenary United Methodist Church, 419 McCallie Ave., Chattanooga, Tn. 37402 or to Hospice of Chattanooga, 4411 Oakwood Drive, Chattanooga, Tn. 37416.
