Covenant Wins 2-0 Over Berry

  • Tuesday, September 23, 2014
The Covenant men's soccer team won for the third consecutive time as the Scots earned a 2-0 victory over non-conference foe Berry on Tuesday night at Scotland Yard.

Covenant (6-2-1) is 4-0-1 in its last five matches since losing in double-overtime to then-ranked No. 13 Emory. Within that stretch, the Scots have compiled three shutouts. The win is the second in as many years over Berry after the Scots went 11 years between victories in the series.

Joel Friesen got the scoring going in the 10th minute of play.
After a Mike Arango corner kick, Friesen received a deflected ball just outside the box and made a move to get around a Berry defender before burying the shot giving the Scots a 1-0 lead. The score was Friesen's fourth of the year, which is tied for the team lead.

Berry outshot Covenant 6-4 in the opening period, but the Scots held a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.

Covenant held that 1-0 edge for nearly the next 45 minutes before Ian Meredith provided an insurance goal in the 89th minute for the Scots. Meredith received a pass from Friesen and then worked his way around a couple of Berry defenders before knocking his shot off the crossbar and into the net. Meredith's goal was also his fourth of the year.

Covenant outshot Berry 11-4 in the second half and 15-10 for the match. Danny Knight led the Scots with five shots, while Berry's Zak Wallingford had three for the visiting Vikings.

Daniel Kubin picked up his second shutout, and third on the season, in as many matches as he made three saves on the night. Berry's Jon Nelson also made three saves.

Covenant will continue non-conference play on Saturday when they travel to Birmingham, Ala., to take on Birmingham Southern on Saturday at 8 p.m. eastern.
