Mocs Women Finish Second At Pinehurst Challenge

  • Tuesday, October 13, 2015
The Chattanooga Mocs women’s golf team continued its fine play this week finishing second at the Pinehurst Challenge on Pinehurst No. 1. The Mocs level-par 288 extended its par or better streak to six in a row.

The squad’s 1-under 863 was six behind East Carolina in first at 857. Elon was third at 866, while Iowa and Maryland were tied for a distant fourth at 873 (+9).

“I'm pretty pleased with the way we played.
It's really encouraging,” coach Colette Murray said. “We got beat, but East Carolina played well.”

Monica San Juan and Isabella Loza led the way today with twin 70s. Emily McLennan turned in a 73, while Megan Woods added a 75. Cris Perez had the drop score with a 76.

San Juan tied for ninth overall with the best finish of her young career (3 starts) at -3 (213). She tied McLennan, who tied for 20th at 218, for the team lead in birdies with 12. Loza and Perez ended up at 219, while Woods was another stroke behind at 220.

“Delighted for her. It was just a matter of time,” Murray added. Hopefully this is just a sign of things to come.”

It was an impressive team effort with every student-athlete counting in at least two rounds. The drop score total over the three 18s was 226 which would’ve been top 5 on 16 of the 19 teams in the field.

“That's what we're looking for,” Murray concluded. “We're finally in a place (depth-wise) to put out those good numbers every week.”

William & Mary’s Alessandra Liu won medalist honors shooting -10 (206). Elon’s Emily Brooks was second at -7 with ETSU’s Vivienne Chin and Old Dominion’s Rachel Walker tied for third at -6.

Chattanooga is back in action next Monday at the Cardinal Cup in Louisville. The two-day, 54-hole event is Oct. 19-20 at Cardinal Golf Club. Live scoring links are available on GoMocs.com via the women’s golf schedule page.
