Driver's License Services Now Available On UTC Campus

  • Friday, October 23, 2015

Students, faculty, and staff at UTC will not have to travel far when it comes time to renew or replace a Tennessee driver license or state identification card.  The Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security on Friday announced it has installed a driver license self-service kiosk at the University Center on UT’s Chattanooga campus.

The kiosk is accessible from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m., Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.  Located in the University Center at 642 East 5th St., the kiosk is open to the general public, as well as students and staff.  Parking is located in the parking garage next to the center.

“We appreciate the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga for the opportunity to provide this service on campus,” Commissioner Bill Gibbons said. “It will be a real convenience for those who attend or teach classes here on campus, and will help us reduce wait times at our Chattanooga area driver services centers.”

Commissioner Gibbons made the announcement with Lori Bullard, assistant commissioner of Driver Services, and Dr. Richard Brown, UTC executive vice chancellor.

Tennessee citizens may use the kiosk to renew or replace an existing driver license or state identification card. The kiosk takes a photo and uses facial verification to verify the image on record.  It processes credit card payment and prints an interim license, which is valid for 20 days. The new secure license or ID card is mailed to the applicant’s home.

Executive Vice Chancellor Brown said, “UTC is pleased to partner with The Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security to provide an innovative and efficient driver’s license and State ID renewal service to over 14,000 university faculty, staff, and students who visit our university on a daily basis. The convenience and state of the art technology will deliver the highest value to the public we serve.”

UT’s kiosk is the third in Chattanooga.  The other kiosk locations include the Driver Services Center, 6502 Bonny Oaks Dr., and the Hamilton County Clerk Driver Services Center, 6135 Heritage Park Dr. The department has installed 37 kiosks at various locations across Tennessee. For a listing of kiosk locations, please visit http://tn.gov/safety/article/kiosks
