In the season opener for the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, the visiting Stanford wrestlers defeated UTC, 19-16, Saturday at Maclellan Gym.

UTC (0-1) won five of the 10 matches, but Stanford won the match on the strength of more bonus points having four major decisions (worth one point each) to one for the Mocs.

Winners for UTC were Chris DeBien (133), Michael Pongracz (149), John Lampe (184), No. 14 Scottie Boykin (197) and No. 20 Jared Johnson (285).

Stanford victors were Connor Schram (125), No.12 Joey McKenna (141), Max Hvolbek (157), No.4 Jim Wilson (165) and Keaton Subjeck (174).

Stanford (2-0) opened the match as Connor Schram scored a third period takedown for a come from behind, 4-3 win against Alonzo Allen and a 3-0 team lead. Allen gained the opening takedown and led 3-1 after two periods, but Schram scored an escape and a takedown in the third period for the win.

UTC’s DeBien looked solid from the start in gaining his first college win with an opening period takedown and outscoring Mason Pengilly, 5-1 in the third period for a 7-3 win.

At 141, freshman and former world junior silver medalist Joey McKenna (Blair Academy) had four takedowns in route to a 10-2 major decision against UTC frosh Roman Boylen.

At 149, Michael Pongracz had the UTC faithful on their feet gaining the winning takedown in the final two seconds for the 4-2 win to pull UTC within one at 7-6.

At 157, Max Hvolbek scored three, first period takedowns and won 14-2 for an 11-6 lead.

At 165, No.4 ranked Jim Wilson scored a 20-7 major decision against freshman Dominic Lampe, while teammate Keaton Subjek (174) used five takedowns for a 15-4 win and a 19-6 lead with three matches remaining.

The Mocs showed its strength in the upper weights as John Lampe (17-6), Boykin (8-3) and Johnson (4-2) added 10 points to the UTC total.

Lampe looked solid in building a 6-1 opening period lead and kept the pressure on Garet Krohn for the win.

Boykin gained an escape and a pair of takedowns for a 5-1 lead after two periods on the way to victory, while No. Johnson defeated No,13 Nathan Butler, 4-2.

“We wrestled flat for some reason and UTC looked in great shape and wrestled well in certain matches,” said Stanford coach Jason Borelli. “I think some of our guys overlooked UTC, but I know our staff is well aware of how good a team Heath Eslinger has.

“Yet our guys in the middle weights did wrestle well (McKenna, Hvolbek, Wilson, Subjeck) (gaining the four major decisions).

“This (Maclellan Gym) gym provides a tough environment in which to wrestle and the fans are quite knowledgeable of the sport.”

Heath Eslinger said, “We had a chance to win but didn’t, but we did have some bright spots today as Jared Johnson winning at heavyweight was huge and a good win for Chris DeBien.

“We did not do a lot of things well and need more consistency.”
