After sleeping on the 36-hole lead the Lee men’s golf team ran away with the unofficial Gulf South Conference Championship winning by a full 10 strokes over the University of West Florida after Tuesday’s final round at the Tunica National Golf Course.

Due to Lee’s reclassification process into NCAA Division II the Argonauts will represent the GSC in the South Region tournament but the Flames staked their claim by finishing atop the leaderboard.

The Flames shot an 866 team total led by junior Peyton Sliger who claimed medalist honors with 215 total after a sizzling three-under par 69 final round. It was the first individual title for the junior. Shea Sylvester and Taylor Davis followed closely behind with a 217 total to tie for third after both players fired an even round 72 in round three.

North Alabama (882) finished third while Delta State (886) and Valdosta State (888) rounded out the top five. West Florida's Esteban Castro joined Sliger in medalist honors shooting the low round of the day, a four-under par 68.

Freshman Cory Sheppard followed up his even par 72 in round two with a final round 76 to end tied for 12th with a 223. Adam Wright rounded out the Flames scoring with a 10-over par 226.

The win marks the fifth team title in 11 tournaments for Lee during 2014-15 campaign. The future is bright as Maupin’s squad returns all five players who participated in the conference championship victory next season.

The women’s team made a statement to close out its spring season and final year before being fully eligible for conference postseason play and awards with a second place finish at the Gulf South Conference Championship after Tuesday’s final round.

The Lady Flames trailed only West Florida, who won the tournament with a 910 team total. Lee fired a final round 302 to finish at 929, a full seven shots ahead of third place Shorter University.

West Georgia and West Alabama rounded out the top five finishers in the eight team field at the Tunica National Golf Course.

Junior Bernadette Little and freshman Caroline Moore led the charge for the Lady Flames finishing tied for seventh after each fired a 230 total. Little ended with a final round 76 while Moore shot a 74 to pace the team in round three.

Senior Madison Alexander finished her Lee career in style with a birdie on the 18th hole to end with a 234 total after shooting a final round 76. Freshman Sam Burrus added an eight-over par 80 (236) while Cailey Gino rounded out the Lee scoring with an 82 and a 238 finish.

West Georgia’s Stephanie Bennett took home medalist honors with a final round 71 to give her a 221 score. Savannah Payne of West Alabama followed with a 225 to finish in second place.

The Lady Flames will return 4-of-5 players as coach John Maupin and his squad will be fully eligible for postseason play beginning next season.
