Governor Haslam To Attend Children's Nutrition Program Of Haiti Benefit

  • Tuesday, May 12, 2015

The Children’s Nutrition Program of Haiti, a faith-based organization headquartered in Chattanooga, announced its annual benefit, Haiti Rising, scheduled for Thursday, June 11, and will feature Governor Bill Haslam as its special guest.

“We are excited to have Governor Haslam speak at our event," said Chris Devaney, the newly appointed executive director at CNP.  "Empowering individuals and communities with the ability to raise healthy children and families is the mission of CNP. The governor's leadership on issues affecting Tennessee families is strong. I think it is a perfect fit.”

CNP of Haiti is based in the southwestern part of the country in the city of Leogane, which was near the epicenter of the devastating 2010 earthquake. Dr. Mitch Mutter of Hamilton County, who became concerned about the extreme malnutrition problem in Haiti after several medical missions in the country, founded the organization in 1998. CNP coordinates with and hires local Haitians to work with communities so they are self sufficient and healthy.

“CNP is a tremendous program and is doing great work in the country of Haiti," said Governor Bill Haslam.  "We are blessed as Tennesseans to have so many people in our state volunteering their time to do great things not just here at home, but across the world.”

CNP of Haiti continues to make strides in its continuing program to improve the health of Haitian children and families. Recently, CNP was awarded NGO status by the government of Haiti, which will allow the organization to operate more efficiently and effectively in the country.

In addition, Mr. Devaney, a Hamilton County resident and longtime political strategist, was hired as the group’s new executive director.  Mr. Devaney, who recently stepped down as chairman of the Tennessee Republican Party, has worked in the political and communications arena for over twenty years. His experience includes senior roles with three United States Senators, including Bob Corker and Fred Thompson of Tennessee.

CNP of Haiti has also appointed Bobby Stone as a new board member. Mr. Stone is an award winning film and video producer. A native Chattanoogan, Mr. Stone attended Baylor School and UTC. He started a film production business in 1985, turning it into a successful company for over 25 years.

The event, themed Haiti Rising, is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Waterhouse Pavilion in downtown Chattanooga on Thursday, June 11. For ticket information, go to www.haitirising.splashthat.com, or call the CNP headquarters at 495-1122.
