The Chattanooga City Council released the following statement joining Thursday's National Day of Action working to support the Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Power Plan and the first ever federal limits on dangerous carbon pollution expected to be released next week.
In anticipation of these landmark public health and clean air safeguards, the Chattanooga City Council is joining leaders across the country calling for strong action on climate change.
The statement says, “Climate change is an undeniable problem and one of the greatest challenges we face today.
It threatens not only our environment, but also our public health and safety. The Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Power Plan sets the first ever federal limits on carbon pollution from existing power plants that causes climate change, invests in clean, renewable energy, and boosts energy efficiency.
"The plan gives us an unprecedented opportunity to protect public health while also improving our economy.
"Clean Power Plan implementation will reduce dangerous power plant pollution that triggers asthma attacks, heart attacks, and premature deaths.
"And, with smart planning, can benefit consumers by lowering electricity bills over the long term. For these reasons, among others, we urge our fellow elected officials to join us in support for the Clean Power Plan and make the call for climate action now.”
