Covenant Ties With Sewanee, 1-1

The Covenant men's soccer team took a season-high 21 shots, but could not come away with a non-conference victory as the Scots played to a 1-1 draw at Sewanee on Tuesday night at Puett Field.

The tie snaps a four-match losing skid for Covenant (1-8-2) and is the second draw of the year for the Scots. It was also the second draw in the last four meetings between the programs.

Despite holding a 21-17 shot advantage in the match, it was an own goal that gave Covenant its lone score of the night. Trailing 1-0 in the 63rd minute, the Scots were on the fortunate side of a misplay from the Sewanee defense after a corner kick from Jesse Riggs as the ball ended up in the net. The own goal came just moments after the Scots missed an opportunity on a failed penalty kick attempt.

Covenant continued to mount pressure against the Sewanee defense for the rest of the second half as the Scots took six more shots in the final 25 minutes of regulation. Sewanee keeper Will Merriman made two saves during that stretch to keep the match tied at 1-1.

In the first overtime session, Covenant took all four shots, including Isaac Johnson's attempt that hit the post in the 97th minute. The second overtime saw both teams with chances, but were unable to secure the game-winner. Sewanee had its best look in the 108th minute, but Scots keeper Paul Lemay made a diving save Marco Randazzo's attempt to preserve the draw.

Sewanee (5-5-2) notched the match's first score in the second minute as Matt Hawse slipped his shot past Lemay, assisted by Ryan MacDonald, to give the host Tigers a 1-0 lead.

Lemay tied a season-high with six saves on the night, while Merriman made eight for Sewanee. Riggs and Josh Brower each took four shots for the Scots and Matt Morefield attempted three. Nine of Covenant's 21 shots were on target.

Covenant will return to Scotland Yard on Friday to host USA South member Huntingdon. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
