Six Baylor seniors wrestled in Duke Arena for the last time Saturday and produced four championships along with a second and a third place finish to lead the Red Raiders to the TSSAA D-II Middle/East Region title.
Baylor won the region team title with 233 points and seven champions and more importantly advanced 13 wrestlers to next weekend’s state traditional tournament in Franklin while McCallie was second (213.5 pts) with two champions and 13 state qualifiers.
MBA was third with four champs and 11 state qualifiers and BGA was fourth with one champion and four state qualifiers in the eight-team region tournament.
Baylor senior champions were Jack Reynolds (132), Michael Murphy (145), Caleb Powell (170), Ryan Parker (195), while Andy Atchley was second at 126 and defending state champ Cooper Reiniche was third at 285.
Other Baylor winners were Austin Atchley (138), Mason Reiniche (152) and Khamari Whimper (182).
“I was pleased with the way we wrestled today as our guys met the challenge in the finals (with the region title on the line) and the guys wrestled up to expectations,” said Baylor coach Ben Nelson.
McCallie champs were Brock Herring (126) and Judah Duhm (160), while MBA had champs in Joe Torquine (113), Gabriel Elkin (120), D’On Coofer (220) and John Kelly (285).
BGA’s Ian McCullough was the first champion of the afternoon at 106.
Closing in on 50: Baylor senior Ryan Parker is 48-0 this season and should have three matches at the state tourney.
