St. Augustine, Fla. – Both Dalton State golf teams started the spring schedule with decisive wins at the challenging Slammer and Squire Golf Course at World Golf Village, near St. Augustine. The two-day, 36-hole men’s and women’s tournaments concluded Tuesday.
The Dalton State men's golf team had a complete team effort as all seven Roadrunners playing in the seven team, 39 player Georgetown College (KY) Invitational finished in the top 13. Dalton State (296-291 = 587) overcame a four-stroke first day deficit to beat SSAC rival William Carey (292-307 = 599) by a dozen strokes.
Sean Elliott (72-70 = 142) shot a two-under-par on Tuesday to earn individual medalist honors.
His teammates also excelled with only one score out of the 70's at the challenging Par-72, 6660 yard Slammer and Squire Golf Course at World Golf Village.
"It was a good start to a busy stretch of golf," said Men's Coach Ben Rickett. "We have some things we need to work on, but today was a total team effort. "We needed all five guys to perform today to catch William Carey and they did a great job, minimizing the damage and finishing strong."
SCAD - Atlanta (307-311 = 618) and Indiana Tech (320-298 = 618) finished the tournament in a tie for third. The hosts from Georgetown (314-328 = 642) were fifth followed by Covenant (350-345 = 695) and Alice Lloyd College (KY) (366-386 = 752).
Dalton State's Levi Nix (73-74 = 147) finished fourth, Adam Morris (76-73 = 149) was tied for sixth, Chase Jones (75-75 = 150) finished 8th, Dalton Johnson and Anthony D'Angelo tied for tenth. Anthony and Austin Hughes (80-74 = 155) played as individuals.
Covenant is a member of NCAA Division III. All of the other men's and women's teams in the tournament are from the NAIA.
Next action for the Dalton State men will be in Albany, Ga. when the Roadrunners play next week at the Doublegate Country Club.
The DS women's golf team started the spring season with an incredible 35-stroke win over second place SCAD Atlanta.
Dalton State is also home to five of the top seven women’s golfers in the Par-72, 5,833 yard tournament.
"This was a great way to start the spring with win number five and another win over a top ten program," said DS Coach Jim McGrew. "It was a complete team effort. I am really proud of the girls. We are definately not where we need to be to compete for a national championship, but we should improve as we put in work over the next few months.."
Dalton State (304-309 = 613) easily took the four-team event. SCAD Atlanta (317-331 = 648) was followed by Brenau (360-349 = 709) and Georgetown (389-371 = 760).
Katie Dalton (74-73 = 147) of the Roadrunners was medalist in the tournament. Erika Wardzinski (75-75 = 150) of DS was three strokes back in second. Ashley Madden (77-79 = 156) of SCAD Atlanta was third. Julia McQuilken (72-86 = 158) of DS tied for fourth with Brenau's Morgan Wood (79-79 = 158).
Caroline Griffin (83-76 = 159) and Carly Shane (77-82 - 159) finished tied for sixth. Rachel Rebne (87-85 = 172) was 11th in the 23 player field. Carly played as an individual.
The Dalton State women will play on March 7th and 8th in the Loyola of New Orleans Spring Invitational at Oak Harbor Golf Club in New Orleans.
