Children’s Hospital Raises Awareness For Child Abuse With Pinwheel Garden

  • Thursday, April 7, 2016

Throughout the month of April, 360 pinwheels will be in the lawn area in front of the entrance of Children’s Hospital at Erlanger emergency department.  Each pinwheel represents a child abuse victim treated and supported in the last year by hospital staff.

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month.  During this month and throughout the year, Children’s Hospital encourages all individuals and organizations to play a role in making the city of Chattanooga and surrounding communities a better place for children and families.

“Our hospital provided medical care and support services for 360 victims of child abuse and neglect in the last year. This did not include the numerous other children who received services at our local partner agencies such as Children’s Advocacy Center of Hamilton County and the Rape Crisis Response Center,” said Karla Garcia, MD, FAAP, Child Protection Team director for Children’s Hospital. “With the long-term impact of parenting in mind, we are commemorating this month by reinforcing the message that early recognition, prevention and treatment of child abuse is crucial in minimizing its long-term effects.”

"Children’s Hospital is committed to the care of these vulnerable children and their families.  The staff asks all area residents to take time this month to acknowledge the role communities and medical professionals play in protecting children’s well-being," officials said.

“It is important to identify early signs of child abuse and focus on ways to build and promote the protective factors in every interaction with children and families,” said Dr. Garcia.

Officials said the blue pinwheel is a symbol of healthy futures for all children in the community.

To raise awareness about child abuse prevention, the Children’s Advocacy Center and Erlanger encourage you to wear a blue article of clothing this Friday.
