Houston Museum Hosts Lecture About Collectible Alabama Pottery

Pieces Of Sand Mountain Pottery On Display At Houston Museum

  • Monday, August 29, 2016

The Houston Museum, the only local museum with an extensive collection of Victorian art glass and antiques, announced Monday it will host a free lecture featuring Sand Mountain, Alabama Pottery, Sunday, Sept. 25, at 1:30 p.m.

The lecture speakers are Joey Brackner, director, Alabama Center for Traditional Culture, and Danny Maltbie, collector and expert on Sand Mountain Pottery.

“This exciting lecture will keep you on the edge of your seats as you hear about Sand Mountain Pottery’s history, heritage and how it has become collectible,” said Amy Autenreith, Houston Museum director.  “You’ll be able to touch and feel the amazing works of art and learn how to recognize a collectible piece of Alabama pottery.”

Mr. Brackner said, “Given the diversity and wealth of Alabama's folk life, we strive to broaden an understanding of our community-based traditions so that all Alabamians can be proud of this shared inheritance.  We see this lecture as a way to bring that to life for Chattanoogans as well.”

This event is free but donations are accepted. There will be several pieces of Sand Mountain pottery on display, as well as a piece from the Houston collection. Mr. Brackner’s book, “Alabama Folk Pottery” will be available for purchase. Seating is limited to less than 30.  Please call the museum at 267-7176 to reserve a seat.
