“Without a doubt this is our strongest team in the 25 years of the Oehmig Cup and of course it is great to win it for the second straight year.”

Lookout Mountain team captain Steve Johnson

The Lookout Mountain golfers started strong and finished strong and won the 25th Oehmig Cup this past weekend, 23.5 – 11.5, for the second straight year in the Rider Cup format held at the Chattanooga Golf and Country Club.

Captained by Steve Johnson, the victors won five of the first six matches Friday (and halved the other match) on the way to an 11.5 – 5.5 lead after day one.

Sunday was much the same as the LM team won 10 of the 16 singles matches and gained a half point (tie) in four others.

The Country Club did make it interesting early Sunday outscoring the LM squad 4-2 in the first six matches (three wins and a pair of ties).

But LM showed its depth winning six of the next eight matches and gaining ties in the other two to lead 20 to 10.5 with only four matches still on the course.

“Our guys played well all weekend and it’s great to win for the first time in 25 years here on the Country Club course,” said captain Johnson who was a second team D-II All-American golfer at Abilene Christian.

25 Years of the Oehmig Cup: Lookout Mountain team member Pat Corey is the only golfer in the history of the competition to play in all 25 events.

“I love to play in the event in honor of the late Lew Oehmig and also his son, King, who passed away last year,” said Corey, a former winning captain, who was 1-1-1 in his three matches this weekend.

“We all owe a big thanks to Mike Jenkins and Lex Tarumianz who are the co-founders of the Oehmig Cup as this is a great way to honor the Oehmig family,” Corey stated.

Perfect Weekend: Lookout Mountain golfers who were 3-0 on the weekend (7) – Grant Caldwell, Arnie Cunningham, Keith Davis, Heath Haley, Mark Harrell, Steve Johnson, Jay Walston.

Tim Burns was the lone Country Club player to win all three matches.

Lookout Mountain Team (16): Winston Brown, Grant Caldwell, Jimmy Chapin, Arnie Cunningham, Pat Corey, Keith Davis, Heath Haley, Jim Haley, Mark Harrell,  captain Steve Johnson, Wes Robbins, Tom Schreiner, Patten Smith, David Walker, Jay Walston, John Williams.
