Mocs Soccer Wins 1-0 Over Citadel

  • Friday, September 30, 2016
- University of Tennessee at Chattanooga freshman Hannah Torbett (Johnson City, Tenn.) scored her first collegiate goal to lead the Mocs’ to a 1-0 Southern Conference victory over The Citadel Friday night at Finley Stadium. Chattanooga improves to 4-7-1 overall and 2-1 in SoCon play while the Bulldogs drop to 3-7 on the year and 0-3 in league action.

Torbett’s goal came in the first half in the 27th minute. Junior Peyton McCollum was working down the left side and sent a pass to Torbett at the top of the 18-yard box.
She fired her shot past The Citadel’s keeper Logan Leask for what would stand as the game winner.

“Fantastic start to conference play,” Chattanooga head coach Gavin McKinney said. “I think confidence goes a long way. We built off our win on Sunday and we did some really good things today.”

It was a defensive struggle with both teams near even on shots. The Mocs edged The Citadel 10-9 in attempts with the Bulldogs getting a 5-4 shots on goal advantage. Chattanooga senior keeper Katie Emig (Knoxville, Tenn.) got the start, earning her third win and second shutout this season with five saves on the night.

“I thought defensively we kept things nice and compact and we worked extremely hard to win the ball back,” McKinney said. “Going forward, there were times when we connected and looked quite dangerous.

“All in all, it was a really important three points for us early in the season.”

Freshman Jordan Mueller (Hendersonville, Tenn.) had a game-high three shots. McCollum and junior Ellie Myrick each had two apiece. The Mocs had six corner kicks and seven second half shots.

Chattanooga will remain at home for the second match in a five-game home stand to host Mercer Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Finley Stadium. Admission is FREE and concessions will be available. For those who can’t make the game, follow the action online at GoMocs.com.
