No To The Rezoning Of The Birchwood Landfill

  • Thursday, October 12, 2017

The Birchwood Landfill has been polluting the air, the ground and watershed since 1974. It’s time to shut it down and allow nature to take over that site.

I have lived close to it for almost 25 years and I have seen and smelled the pollutants that are emitted from this site. Even though this rezoning is for building materials, I still do not want this close to where I live.

I know there are other alternatives to finding a suitable location to dump waste but Birchwood is not the place anymore. There is no guarantee that the liners in place now on the garbage side of the landfill will never allow the toxins to leach into the ground water supply and, when it does, the cost to fix it will be handed down to the taxpayer just like the old landfills in the city of Chattanooga.

I ask you the Hamilton County Commissioners to vote no for this rezoning. Give us back the clean air, water and natural landscape that we deserve. This is the reason I moved to Harrison.
