K. Alan Shikoh
Lee University faculty member K. Alan Shikoh, guitar, and guest artist Dr. Nikolasa Tejero, clarinet, will present a recital on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in Squires Recital Hall, located in Lee’s Humanities Center.
The evening’s performance will include unique selections ranging from the Viennese classical style to Pan-American music traditions, blurring the lines between art, jazz, rock, pop, and folk music.
Pieces by Lucien Battaglia, Jan Friedlin, Mauro Giuliani, Libby Larsen, and Astor Piazzolla will be featured, in addition to new arrangements by Mario Abril of works by Emilio Grenet, Carlos Guastavino, and Heitor Villa-Lobos.
Mr. Shikoh’s musical career has flourished since his high school years, during which he was chosen to perform on NPR’s From the Top radio program. He has also played in the masterclasses of several world-renowned artists including Roland Dyens, Eliot Fisk, and Oscar Gighlia. In addition to his classical guitar background, Mr. Shikoh frequently serves as a session player and studio musician on both acoustic and electric instruments for projects spanning diverse musical styles.
Mr. Shikoh holds a master’s degree in guitar performance from Middle Tennessee State University and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC). He currently teaches at Lee University, Southern Adventist University, and Covenant College.
Dr. Tejero’s playing is described as “…[possessing] technical and musical mastery...rhythmic and expressive flavor” by The Post and Courier. She has presented at conferences and festivals internationally such as the College Music Society, Spoleto USA, and the International Music Festival, among others. Most recently, she partnered with the Chattanooga Public Library to create Symphonic Tales, a music and literacy program for young children.
Dr. Tejero is currently an associate professor of clarinet and the woodwind division coordinator at UTC, where she also coaches music, teaches theory and literature courses, and researches Latin American art music traditions.
