The Lee University women’s tennis team dropped its second consecutive Gulf South Conference match with an 8-1 loss to The University of Alabama in Huntsville Thursday afternoon at the DeVos Tennis Center. The Lady Flames are now 5-3 overall and 2-3 in the GSC, while UAH improved to 5-10 (3-3 GSC).

The Chargers swept the doubles competition and won the first five singles matches to secure the team win. Cristina Cabanas and Monika Polakovic handed Ana Webber and Laura Beth Hardesty an 8-4 defeat, while Marleen Gort and Naomi Esteve defeated Krista Good and Joanna Grzegrzolka by the same score.
Sarah Stearman and Aniek Remmerswaal outlasted Francesca Tondi and Marta Garcia-Nieto for an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles.

Esteve and Cabanas won their matches at No. 5 and No. 2 singles, respectively, without dropping a game to supply the fourth and fifth team points.

Marta Briega was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Webber in the sixth position. Stearman downed Good 6-0 and 6-4 at No. 4 singles. Remmerswaal held off Garcia-Nieto to win their match 6-4, 6-3.

Tondi ended UAH’s hope for a shut out with a three-set victory over Gort at No. 1 singles. Tondi won the opening set 6-3 and Gort fought back to claim the second set 7-5. In a super set tie-breaker, Tondi claimed the match and team point with a 10-4 margin.

The Lady Flames begin a three-match road trip on Saturday with an 11 a.m. EDT showdown with Mississippi College.
