John William Alford, 74, lifelong resident of Charleston, passed away on Thursday, May 18, 2017, of complications from a stroke surrounded by family and friends.

He attended Chilcutt Elementary school and graduated from Charleston High School. Mr. Alford retired from Magic Chef/Maytag shipping department after 38 years of service. He enjoyed farming, tending his livestock, gardening and going to flea markets.
 
He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert Wayne and Mary Elizabeth Gatlin Alford; siblings Joseph Gene Alford, Glen Franklin Alford and Betty Louise Alford.
 
Survivors include his wife, Linda Franks Alford of Charleston; daughters, Marsa (Tracy) Garner of Georgetown, Jenny (Tom) Brent of Avoca, IN; step-grandchildren, Aaron Storm, Corbin Brent and Moriah Brent; sisters-in-law: Judy Wilkinson of Rogersville, AL, Betty (Mike) Womble of Killen, AL, Nita (Tom) Hixson of Richmond Hill, GA, Pat (James) Ogles of Charleston, and Marge (John) Singleton of Killen, AL; nieces: Teresa Yates, Donna (Dale) Hall, Marj Alford, Karen (Brian) Mooneyham, Laurie Nunley, Sharon Chandler, Rachel Singleton, Beth Singleton, Michelle Vines, and Lindsay Butler; nephews: David Womble, Joe McDaniel, and Kevin Hixson.
 
Funeral services will be conducted at 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 21, in the chapel of Fike-Randolph & Son Funeral Home with Dr. Jay McCluskey officiating. Interment will follow in the old section of Union Grove Cemetery in Charleston.
 
His family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home prior to the service.
