World War II Veteran Was Active Member At Brainerd Baptist Church

George T. Stanley, 92, of East Ridge, passed away Monday evening, October 15, 2018.  

He was an active member of Brainerd Baptist Church where he taught the second graders Sunday School Class. He was an Honorary Lifetime Deacon and served on several committees in the church including the Pastor Search Committee. George was well known at Brainerd Baptist School as the “Ice Cream Man”.  In 1995 he received the David Brainerd Service Award.  The school awards the George Stanley Service Award to outstanding teachers. George was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving in World War II. He was a die Hard Tar Heels Basketball fan.  A graduate of Elon University, George was retired from Torrington-Exeltor Textiles.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Jessie Stanley; five brothers and two sisters.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Mary Jane Doubles Stanley; daughter, Janie Stanley Mosman and her husband Stewart; son, Tommy Stanley and his wife Beth; two grandsons, Jonathan Mosman and his wife Avery, and Joseph Mosman; numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 12 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 22, at Brainerd Baptist Church with the Reverend Dr. Steve Rowland and the Reverend Edwin Sink officiating.  Burial will be in Chattanooga National Cemetery with military honors.

The family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m. on Sunday at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, 404 South Moore Road.
