Music at St. Paul’s announces its 2018-19 Artist Series season presenting four concerts featuring internationally renowned soloists and ensembles performing in Chattanooga for the first time. All concerts take place at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 305 W. Seventh St. (at Pine) in downtown Chattanooga.

This season’s Artist Series opens on Friday at 7:30 p.m., with award winning virtuoso organist Aaron Tan, first prize winner of the American Guild of Organists’ 2018 National Young Artists Competition in Organ Performance. He will be performing a varied selection of music by Bach, Bolcom, Duruflé, Franck, Schumann and Vierne, among others.
Describing his program, Mr. Tan notes, “The first half explores organ music originating from the Romantic and early modern era, particularly works of the French tradition. The second half explores organ music based on American idioms like the Afro-American spiritual, Gospel hymnody, and American popular music. The entire concert is bookended by movements from two of Vierne's great organ Symphonies.”
Paul Thomas, director of Music at St. Paul’s, said, “We are excited to present Aaron Tan in concert at St. Paul's. His program will showcase the great expressive range of our Casavant organ, from whispering to thundering, with distinctive timbres and colors along the way. As evidenced by his recent first prize and audience prize at the National Young Artist Competition in Organ Performance, Aaron is a world-class performer. His recital is sure to inspire and delight all in attendance.”
The 2018-19 Artists Series continues on Friday, Dec. 7, with a candlelight concert featuring the folk inspired early music ensemble Hesperus (Tina Chancy, Renaissance viols, Barbara Holinshed, voice; Daniel Swenberg, lute and theorbo) performing Exulta Filia, a candlelight holiday program. In 2019, internationally renowned classical guitarist and composer David Leisner performs a recital featuring Villa Lobos and da Falla, as well as his own music on Friday, Feb. 1. The season concludes on Friday, March 1, with Quarteto Cuiroga, the acclaimed string quartet from Spain, performing Beethoven and Ginastera on a set of matched Stradivarius instruments.
Mr. Thomas said, “For our 2018-19 season, the St. Paul’s Artist Series features an exciting selection of world-class soloists and ensembles from Europe and the United States performing a wide range of wonderful repertoire. We are delighted to bring these outstanding musicians to our beautiful, historic church, an appropriate setting for sublime music that will lift hearts and minds heavenward."
