Baylor's Smith Qualifies For 2020 Olympic Team Trials

This past week (Jan. 9-12) Baylor Swim Club athletes Jack Kirby, Cecilia PorterAddison Smith, and Ellie Waldrep competed in the 2019 TYR Pro Swim Series at Knoxville.  This meet featured some of the top swimmers from all across the world and was swum at the Allen Jones Intercollegiate Aquatics Center on the campus of the University of Tennessee. 

On Friday, senior Addison Smith qualified for the 2020 Olympic Team Trials in the 400-meter freestyle.  She finished 11th overall with a time of 4:16.82.  The Olympic Team Trials- Swimming will be held June 21-28, 2020, at CHI Health Center in Omaha, NE.

Addison Smith had an outstanding meet overall.  She swam to two new team records in both the 200 and 80o-meter freestyle events.  Smith swam a 2:02.29 in the 200-meter FR to place 13th overall.

The previous team record was held by Kristen Vredeveld, which was set back in 2011.  She also finished ninth in the 800-meter freestyle.

Senior Jack Kirby swam in the A-final in the men’s 50- meter BK on Thursday. His time of 26.25, was good for 6th overall in the event. The heat also featured Olympic gold medalist Ryan Murphy and up and coming star Michael Andrew who won the event.  Kirby also swam to 15th place finishes in both the 100-meter backstroke and 50-meter freestyle events.

Cecilia Porter competed in the B-Final of the 100 and 200-meter breaststroke.  She finished 15th in the 100 breaststroke, and took 16th in the 200 breaststroke.  Ellie Waldrep swam in the C-Final in the 50 BK to take 20th overall.  She also finished 23rd in the 100-meter backstroke, and 24th in the 50-meter freestyle.
