Covenant Volleyball Falls In Three To Top Ranked Emory

The Covenant volleyball team fell to the defending national champions, and top-ranked Emory, 3-0 (25-14, 25-23, 25-14), on Tuesday evening from the Barnes P.E. Center.

Despite being swept the Scots matched their second-highest blocking total with eight. Alexa Spurling led all players in the category with five while Leah Buys checked in with four.

Spurling also led the team with eight kills while Buys recorded 21 assists and Emily Moore posted a team-high nine digs.

Emory (17-1) took a quick 10-5 lead in the opening set before going on an 11-4 run to spread it wide open.
The Scots were able to close the gap to nine points before the Eagles took the next two points to wrap up the first set 25-14.

Set number two was the most efficient hitting for Covenant (6-13) on the evening posting nine kills on 38 attacks in a set that saw eight ties and four lead changes. After the Eagles took a 7-6 lead the Scots regained the lead and stretched it out to 14-9 capped off by a Buys ace. Emory then slowly began to climb their way back into the set knotting things up at 22. After taking advantage of an Eagle error the Scots held a 23-22 lead before Emory scored the next three points to take the set 25-23.

In the third set, Emory came alive with 14 kills on 30 swings and only four errors for a .333 clip. The Eagles stretched out to a 21-11 lead before eventually taking the final set 25-14.

Emory came into the match ranked 21st in the nation in blocks as and 13th in the nation in attacking percentage but the Scots held them to just five total blocks and a .209 attacking percentage in the contest. 

The Eagles were led by Morgan McKnight and Leah Saunders with nine kills each. Cassie Srb had 33 assists while Elyse Thompson dug 14 attacks to pace the defense.

Covenant plays host to Huntingdon and LaGrange on Saturday in a USA South quad-match. The Scots take on the Hawks at 10 p.m. before wrapping up the day with the Panthers at 4 p.m.
