CSO Presents Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2 On Nov. 3

  • Saturday, October 19, 2019

The Chattanooga Symphony & Opera continues the 2019/20 Chamber Series with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2 on Sunday, Nov. 3, at 3 p.m. at the Chattanooga State Humanities Theatre.

The concert will feature Respighi’s Trittico Botticelliano, Michael Ippolito’s Smoke Rings, and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2. The CSO Chorus and director Darrin Hassevoort will also join the musicians for Ola Gjielo’s musical interpretation of Walt Whitman’s poem, Song of the Universal.

“The performance will open with Respighi's Trittico Botticelliano, which depicts three paintings by Botticelli: Spring, Adoration of Magi, and The Birth of Venus,” says Kayoko Dan, musical director. “These works are colorful, descriptive, and intricately orchestrated to portray each paintings' stories and moods. We will also feature two contemporary composers, Ola Gjielo and Michael Ippolito. Ippolito’s work is written for strings, and the sound and harmony shifts and morphs like the titular smoke rings. Gjeilo’s choral work is upbeat and exuberant. The concert will conclude with Beethoven's Symphony No. 2, one of his earlier works, in which Beethoven steps out of a ‘norm’ of established classical symphonic traditions.”

Seating for the concert is general admission. Tickets are $28 and can be purchased by calling the CSO Box Office at 267-8583 or by visiting the CSO’s website at chattanoogasymphony.org. Ticket-holders are invited to attend a post-concert talk immediately following the performance.
