Chattanooga Symphony And Opera Announces 87th Season

  • Thursday, February 14, 2019
The Chattanooga Symphony & Opera announces their 2019/20 season – the 87th season for the organization. Music programmed showcases a variety of guest artists and classical works throughout the season. The 87th season will also include a spring special event, Disney in Concert A Tale As Old As Time.  2019/20 subscribers have pre-sale access to this special concert event. Remaining tickets will be released for public sale on Aug. 1.

“The 2019/20 season has so many noteworthy programs.
Our focus on female composers in our Masterworks and Chamber Series is an important one to me,” says Samantha Teter, CSO executive director. “We’re offering a spotlight on the contributions of women in classical music, in addition to featuring several female guest artists such as Gloria Chien and Mela Dailey. As a Broadway lover myself, I couldn’t be more thrilled to have the amazing Bernadette Peters with us in October. And the return of Disney in Concert, which sold out in 2016, will certainly delight all generations. I couldn’t be happier about the season and I hope that the community embraces all that we have to offer.”

“I am thrilled to introduce some exciting artists to Chattanooga, including Steven Lin on Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 3, Thomas Landschoot on Haydn's Cello Concerto No. 1 and String Theory's Gloria Chien on Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 2,” said Kayoko Dan, CSO music director. “Throughout the season, you will hear beloved masterworks such as Beethoven's Symphony No. 5, Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition and Ravel's Daphnes and Chloe. In addition, we are featuring seven female composers, including Lili Boulanger, Wang Jie, and Gabriela Lena Frank, to name a few.”

The Barnett & Company Masterworks Series opens with Shostakovich & Rachmaninoff – an evening showcasing iconic works by Russian composers and featuring guest pianist, Steven Lin.  The season continues with Miraculous Mandarin, Daphnis and Chloe, Dona Nobis Pacem with the CSO Chorus, Lee University Chorale and UTC Chamber Singers, and Pictures at an Exhibition.  The Barnett & Company Masterworks Series will also feature Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony and his Piano Concerto No. 2 in celebration of his 250th birthday in 2020.

The Pops Series will open with Broadway superstar, singer and actress Bernadette Peters.  The Pops series will also bring beloved film scores to life in Lights! Camera! Pops! and give audiences the opportunity to hear some of Rock and Roll’s greatest hits in a whole new way, with The Music of Billy Joel & More. The 2019/20 Pops series will also include Chattanooga’s favorite holiday music tradition, Home for the Holidays, as well as the popular annual swing concert, Big Band Fever.

The Chamber Series will include Beethoven’s Symphony No2., Mozart’s Quintet for Piano and Winds, Mozart’s Symphony No. 41, and The American Four Seasons by living composer, Philip Glass. The Chattanooga Ballet will also choreograph and perform to Stravinsky’s Apollo Musagète.

Subscriptions are currently available at www.chattanoogasymphony.org or by calling 423-267-8583. Tickets to individual concerts will go on-sale to the public on Aug. 1.
