The Soddy Daisy Trojans (12-4) boys lacrosse team won the Division 2 State Championship with a commanding 11-1 win over defending champions Murfreesboro. The game was a rematch of last season's TSLA Public Division 2 State Championship game.
Murfreesboro (8-4) won the regular season finale by a score of 7-6 just two weeks prior.
The Trojans score quick to start the game and scored often. Their lead grew to 7 by halftime. Senior attackman John Teffeteller led all scorers with 4 goals.
The Trojans all-time leading scorer, senior attackman Blake Morrow, chipped in 3 goals, including a dazzling behind the back shot. Offensive MVP for the game, senior midfielder Jack Durain also scored 3 goals.
The intriguing story of the season has been the transformation of senior goalie Coleton Elrod from defenseman. Not even on the depth chart at the beginning of the season, Coleton stepped up as a team player when the team's returning goalie decided not to return this season. Coleton's season culminated in what Trojans' club president termed, "the best game I've seen by a goalie in the 5 years I've been associated with the program." The defensive MVP of the game had 18 saves on 19 shots, only giving up a meaningless goal in the final minute.
For this season's efforts, head coach Joshua Wicks has been named the Division 2 coach of the year. Senior Blake Morrow was name offensive player of the year.
TSLA teams, including Soddy Daisy, will be transitioning to the new lacrosse league being formed by TSSAA in the next couple of years.
