Betty was a lifelong resident of Chattanooga and a graduate of Central High School, and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. She was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church, where she was very involved in Sunday School and women of the Church.

She loved life to the fullest and she never met a stranger. She spent a lifetime doing for others. If she could find a way to help someone out she would. She was truly an ambassador for God.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Joseph Smith Jr.; parents, Rex and Mattie Richey; brothers, Raymond, Charlie, and Joe Richey; sisters, Mildred Demars, Sue Harrison, and Dot Sertel.

She is survived by her son, Joe H. (Teri) Smith III of Crested Butte, Co.; daughters, Jean (Colin) Murchison of Fort Thomas, Ky., Jennifer (Randy) Chennault of Chattanooga; grandchildren, Anna and Alec Chennault, Justin and Sarah Smith; sister, Wilma Dietzen of Chattanooga; and brother, Bobby Richey of Ooltewah.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to First Presbyterian Church at 554 McCallie Ave. Chattanooga, Tn. 37402.

Because of the present situation, a small service will be held at Chattanooga National Cemetery with only immediate family. The service will be officiated by Mike Haberkorn.
