Covenant Softball Lose Two In Doubeheader Openers

- The Covenant softball team dropped their opening two games on Saturday in the Birmingham Southern Spring Classic at Jacksonville State.

The Scots fell in the first game of the day 9-1 in six innings to DePauw before dropping a 12-2 game to Emory & Henry in five.

Covenant is now 0-2 on the season. DePauw is now 2-0 while Emory & Henry improved to 2-1.

GAME ONE: DEPAUW 9, COVENANT 1

Faith Manning had the lone RBI for the Scots as they fell to DePauw 9-1 to open up their season.

Manning went 1-for-3 on the day with an RBI double to score Madyson Gibbons in the top of the third for their lone run.

The Tigers got the scoring started in the first as Alyssa Nowak singled through the left side to score Kate Geary and take a 1-0 lead. Paige Price then had a 2 RBI single up the middle in the same inning to take a 3-0 lead that would prove to be enough for the win.

Geary went 2-for-3 in the contest with a pair of RBIs and Nowak had a 2-for-3 day and 2 RBIs. Emily Minett was a perfect 2-for-2 with an RBI and Paige Price led the Tiger offense with a 3-for-4 game and 2 RBIs.

Sarah Huskey was tagged with the loss going five innings giving up nine hits, seven runs (five earned), and five walks while striking out a pair. Lauren Kierpa came in the sixth and went 0.2 of an inning allowing four hits, and two earned runs.

Riley Magoon got the win for the Tigers going five innings scattering three hits and one earned run with a walk while striking out four. Mac Jones went the final inning allowing just a hit and striking out one.

Gibbons, MK Pritchett, Manning, and Cassee Wood all recorded one hit each for the four Scots hits.

GAME TWO: EMORY & HENRY 12, COVENANT 2

After falling behind 11-0 to nothing over the first two and a half innings Emma Giller put the Scots on the board with an RBI single down the right-field line to score Pritchett in the bottom of the third. 

The Wasps added one more on in the fifth and Covenant answered as Kristen Aanensen reached on a fielder’s choice and Cope Whitaker came around to score on a throwing error by the shortstop to bring the score to 12-2.

Covenant put up four hits with one hit each from Wood, Giller, Erika Mast, and Pritchett.

Kierpa got the start but was chased out after 2.1 innings giving up seven hits, eight runs (seven earned), with a pair of walks to be tagged with the loss. Heather Long came in to pick up 2.2 innings of relief work allowing four hits, four earned runs while walking four and striking out two. 

Kendall Varner had a 2-for-2 day with five RBIs including a three-RBI home run to center in the third. Leanna Toler went 2-for-4 with an RBI, Allyson Steadman was a perfect 2-for-2, and Dacey Jenkins rounded out the multi-hit Wasps going 2-for-2 with an RBI.

Tiffany Cole went the complete game for Emory & Henry to pick up her first win of the season. Cole allowed four hits, two runs (one earned), and one walk while striking out four.

The Scots travel back to Alabama to take on Birmingham Southern for a doubleheader on Sat., Feb. 22 beginning at 1 p.m.
