Mocs Take On Paladins Friday And Sunday In Greenville

he University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s basketball team will take on Furman in back-to-back contests this weekend at Timmons Arena in Greenville, S.C.

 

NEW SOCON SCHEDULE

The Southern Conference schedule was tweaked this season due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Teams will play each other twice in three days at the same location. The Mocs will take on Furman on the Paladins’ home court Friday and Sunday.

MOCS vs. PALADINS

The Chattanooga and Furman series began in 1985 as members of the Southern Conference. UTC holds a 55-26 advantage and won both meetings last year. The teams are 5-5 over the last 10 meetings. On the road, UTC is 22-14 against the Paladins and snapped a three-game losing streak at Timmons Arena with a 69-63 win in Greenville last season.

 

ABOUT CHATTANOGA

The Mocs opened Southern Conference play with a 66-51 win over East Tennessee State to improve to 6-4 on the year with four straight wins. Chattanooga is averaging 70.8 points and 38.7 rebounds per game. The Mocs are shooting 43.3 percent from the field and 34.4 percent from beyond the arc. Eboni Williams leads Chattanooga with 15.4 points and 8.1 rebounds per game. She is a two-time Southern Conference Player of the Week and just topped the 700-point mark for her career. Bria Dial leads the SoCon with 25 3-pointers this season and is second for the Mocs with 12.7 points per game. Abbey Cornelius, third on the team in scoring with 7.9 points per game, leads the Mocs with 8.1 rebounds and 20 blocked shots, tied for first in the conference. Dena Jarrells is second on the team in 3-point shooting and averaging a team-best 40.7 percent from long range. She is fourth on the team in scoring with 7.2 points per game.

 

ABOUT FURMAN

The Paladins are 4-6 overall and fell to Wofford on the road in the conference-opener last week. Furman’s wins came against former SoCon foe Georgia Southern, Converse, Queens (NC) and Erskine. The Paladins opened the season at Clemson with a loss and dropped decisions at Georgia State, Tennessee, Georgia and Elon. Furman is averaging 61 points and 39.9 rebounds per game while shooting 38.8 percent from the field 30.7 percent from distance. Tierra Hodges, who leads the league in playing time, is the Paladins top shooter with 16 points and 10.4 rebounds per game. Sydney James is second on the team in scoring with 10.9 points per game and the pair have combined for 29 3-pointers. Tate Walters, with 11 treys of her own, is third on the team in scoring with 9.1 points per game and has a team-best 17 assists.
