Kailey Burrell scored twice and the Covenant women's soccer team dominated Agnes Scott in a 2-0 victory on Tuesday night at Scotland Yard.
The win keeps Covenant (9-5-2, 5-1-1 USA South) alive to finish with a top-two seed in the USA South West Division in next week's conference tournament. Covenant also remained unbeaten at Scotland Yard this season (4-0).
Burrell was at it again. The senior tallied two goals, her second straight multi-goal match and the 11th of her career.
Burrell eclipsed 40 career goals with the two scores, becoming the first Scot to achieve that feat since Kalie Estrada (2005-08).
It was a classic Burrell goal that gave the Scots the lead in the ninth minute. Burrell received a pass inside midfield and then dribbled and weaved her way around three Agnes Scott defenders before putting a shot past the keeper for the score.
In the 27th minute, Burrell scored again. This time, a throw-in from Madeline Andrews led Burrell towards the box and Burrell touched the ball past a defender and rocketed a shot from the top of the box for her second goal of the match.
The goals were the 16th and 17th of the season for Burrell, which leads the USA South. Andrews picked up her first career assist on Burrell's second goal.
Those two strikes were more than enough for Covenant to coast to the victory. The Scots outshot Agnes Scott, 33-0, as the defense limited the visiting Scotties' chances in the attacking half. Lucy Sandhoff and Leilani Brown earned the combined shutout, the ninth shutout for the Scots this season.
Burrell took 14 shots in the match, a career-high. Mae Pierce had six shots, three on target, while Lillie Cate had four attempts off the bench.
Agnes Scott (0-12-2, 0-6-1 USA South) keeper Victoria Cruz made 14 saves.
Covenant will conclude the regular season with a pivotal match at Huntingdon on Saturday. Match time is set for 3 p.m. eastern (2 p.m. central).
