Mocs' Volleyball Wraps-Up Road Trip To Western Carolina

The Chattanooga Mocs volleyball team wraps up a four-match road trip with a pair of Southern Conference matches against Western Carolina in Cullowhee, N.C., this Sunday and Monday.
 
Sunday's match is slated for a 3 p.m. ET start while Monday's finale will begin at 5 p.m. ET, both LIVE on ESPN+.

Chattanooga (4-2, 2-2 SoCon) recorded its first losses of the 2020-21 season last weekend after suffering a road sweep at Wofford. Western Carolina (1-5, 1-3 SoCon) also found itself on the wrong end of a road sweep with a pair of losses at Samford.

ABOUT CHATTANOOGA

Chattanooga (4-2, 2-2 SoCon) dropped its first matches of the 2020-21 season after suffering a two-match sweep on the road in Spartanburg, S.C. at Wofford (2-0, 2-0 SoCon). UTC fell 3-1 in the opening match on Sunday before its comeback effort fell short in a 3-2 loss on Monday. The Mocs have dropped its last six matches in Spartanburg.

 

RACKEL’S CONSISTENCY, LEADERSHIP KEY TO SUCCESS

Junior middle blocker Maia Rackel (Signal Mountain, Tenn.) has posted at least nine kills, 4.0 total blocks and scored 12.0 points in all but one match this season. Rackel recorded 16 kills at a .308 attack percentage with four block assists in Monday’s loss at Wofford. She is fourth in the SoCon with 24.0 total blocks and ranks seventh with a 0.89 blocks per set average.

 

FIVE SET MATCHES BECOMING THE NORM FOR CHATTANOOGA

Following last week’s two five-set wins over UNCG, Chattanooga improved to 3-0 in the 2020-21 season in such matches. UTC lost its first such match of the year on Monday at Wofford. The Mocs have went the distance in five of its last nine matches and since the start of the 2019 season, have appeared in 13 five-set matches, tying Furman for the most in the Southern Conference.
