Nico Ramirez helped lead the Flames to victory on Wednesday with a straight set win at No. 2 singles
The Lee men's tennis team knocked off Carson-Newman, 5-2 on a picturesque Wednesday from the DeVos Tennis Center.
The Flames took care of the doubles point with wins by Daniel Prata and Jordi Dasi, 6-3 and Jesus Garcia and Cristian Pons, 6-4. Bruno Medeiros and Antonio Pons dropped their match, 6-4.
"Although we didn't play the kind of doubles we wanted, we were still able to get the point and the guys did a nice job with their singles," said Lee head coach Patric Hynes.
"Nico played a clean match, he just competed hard and kept his focus throughout. We will get some recovery and get ready for matches this weekend."
Nico Ramirez kept the momentum from doubles going at No. 2 singles as he finished first with a 6-3, 6-3 straight set win over Marc Janse. Jesus Garcia continued his hot start to the season with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Rintaro Oka at No. 1 singles. The Pons brothers finished things off at No. 4 and No. 5 singles. Cristian rallied back after a first set tiebreaking loss to defeat Ids Waterbolk, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3, 6-2. Antonio outlasted Gabriel Dabdab 7-6 (8-6) in a tightly contest first set before earning the point with a 6-4 win in set two.
Carson-Newman's Julian Froehlich and Joshua Ott earned the two points. Froelich topped Dasi, 6-2, 7-5 while Ott battled back from down one set to win a third set super tiebreaker (5-7, 6-0, 10-1).
The Flames improve to an even 2-2 on the year while the Eagles fall to 1-3. Lee will get back to work on Saturday as they travel up to Bristol to square off with King University. First serve is set for 1:30 p.m.
