UTC Soccer Ties Samford 0-0

  • Friday, March 5, 2021
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s soccer team battled defending Southern Conference champion Samford to a 0-0 double-overtime tie on a chilly, windy Friday night at the UTC Sports Complex.

“They’re a really good side,” Mocs head coach Gavin McKinney said. They press phenomenally well. They put you under pressure.

“We did well, we needed to, out of possession to keep ourselves in the game.”

Samford outshot the Mocs 8-1 and Chattanooga keeper Ashton Shields had six saves.
In the second extra period, Shields was able to stretch up and push a hard, high shot over the top of the goal for her sixth and final save.

“Big time save,” McKinney said. “She struck it really well.”

Faith Gober was able to get a shot off for Chattanooga in the second half.

Alex Bice had two shots for Samford off the bench, both on goal, and six more Bulldogs got shots toward the net.

Chattanooga improves to 1-0-1 overall and Samford moves to 0-1-2 on the year while both sport identical league marks at 0-0-1 in the conference-opener for both teams.

“Proud of our girls’ effort to dig in and battle and get a result tonight,” McKinney said. “We were really resilient at the back. We were under pressure.”

Chattanooga remains home next week and will host ETSU Friday, March 12 at 4 p.m. Follow all the action online at GoMocs.com with live stats and streaming video on ESPN+.
