Lee Tennis Team Win Over Lincoln Memorial

The Lee University men’s tennis team extended its win streak to four with a 5-2 win over Lincoln Memorial University Sunday afternoon at the DeVos Tennis Center.

The Flames (5-2) claimed two of the three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead into singles competition. Jesus Garcia and Cristian Pons beat Jake Tuchmann and Thom Hermans 6-2 at No. 2 doubles. LMU (1-6) evened the doubles competition at 1-1 with Luca Pavan and Thomas Turner winning 6-4 against Daniel Prata and Jordi Dasi and No.
3 doubles.

The No. 1 spot was the deciding match for the doubles point. Bruno Medeiros and Antonio Pons held off Iker Moure and Sebastian Colla to win 6-4.

“I thought Jesus and Cristian played excellent doubles today, they got us off to a great start,” said Lee head coach Patric Hynes. “Bruno and Antonio came up big at the right moments.”

Garcia and Ramirez posted wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively, to push the Lee advantage to 3-0. Garcia beat Moure 6-1 and 6-3, while Ramirez dropped his first set 6-2 before coming back to win the next two sets against Colla 6-3 and 6-1.

“Jesus was very solid again today. He’s having another good year,” added Hynes. 

Tuchmann ended the Lee run with a three-set win at No. 3 singles against Cristian Pons. Tuchmann won the first and third sets by the same 6-4 tally. Pons won the second set 6-1.

Antonio Pons secured the team win with a 6-2, 6-3 defeat of Oscar Bailey in the fifth position. Hermans closed the gap with a three-set win over Dasi. Hermans won the first set 6-4 and Dasi forced a third set with a 6-3 second set win. Hermans concluded the singles match with a 6-3 score in the third set.

Diego Garcia supplied the final team score with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Pavan.

“Good win for us. We have a big match coming up against Valdosta State,” Hynes concluded.

The Flames return to competition on Saturday, March 13. The GSC matchup with Valdosta State is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.

 Lisa Kirr claimed a three-set victory at No. 1 singles to help the Lady Flames defeat Lincoln Memorial on Sunday at the DeVos Tennis Center.


The Lee University women’s tennis team also beat LMU on Sunday, winning 6-1. 

“This match was probably won with our start,” said Lee head coach Patric Hynes. “Our ladies did a great job preparing themselves to play today and it showed with doubles. All three pairs made a great start.” 

The Lady Flames (4-2) posted wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to take an early 1-0 lead. Micaela Belen Maiz and Larissa Wieser beat Julia Valls and Amanda Dahlstrom 6-1, while Carley Sickinger and Sierra Donaldson were 6-3 winners over Kristin Vogel and Samantha Hogan.

LMU (2-4) avoided the doubles sweep with a 7-5 win by Johanna Delisse and Valentina Ascarrunz against Lisa Kirr and Matina Ujdur.

Belen Maiz took down Delisse 6-4, 6-0 at No. 2 singles to keep the Lee momentum going. Kirr recovered from losing 6-3 in her first set with 6-3 and 6-2 scores to defeat Valls at the top position. Ujdur fell to Ascarrunz 6-4 in the first set before clinching the team win with 6-4 and 6-3 margins in the next two sets.

“Mica was able to keep the pressure on with a good win,” added Hynes. “Lisa and Matina both had very gritty wins from a set down.”

Vogel again spoiled Lee’s shutout attempt. She posted matching 6-4 scores to edge Sickinger and give LMU their first team point.

Hayden Smith won at No. 6 singles, 6-4 and 6-0, against Claudia Rodriguez. Donaldson completed the team score with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Mae Fitzgerald.

“I’m proud of our team, they had to really fight to get this one, LMU made us play a lot of tough points. Now we will get some rest and recovery and get ready for Valdosta next week,” Hynes concluded. 

The Lady Flames return to competition on Saturday, March 13. The GSC matchup with Valdosta State is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
