Covenant Track and Field Competes In Sewanee Mountain Laurel Invitational

- In the final tune-up before the USA South Championships later in April, the Covenant track and field teams pulled together a solid performance at the Sewanee Mountain Laurel Invitational on Saturday.

In the small meet, the Covenant men placed second with 50 points while the women were third with 48.

Four program records were broken on the day and three season-best marks were established.

On the men's side, Ben Mellott continued his conquests in distance events as he placed first in the 3,000-meter event with a program-record time of 9:04.62.
It was Mellott's second program record in a distance event this season, as he posted the best 5,000-meter time last week.

Jonathan George picked up a couple of first place finishes as well. George won the 1500-meter event with a Covenant season-best time of 4:07.72 and then was part of the 4x400 relay team with Ben Tyson, Josh Leak, and Leif Le Mahieu that won the event with a time of 3:38.32.

In other events for the men, Tyson was first in the 200-meter at 22.96, while Leak was fourth at 24.23. Le Mahieu finished second in the 800-meter at 2:00.48 and Nate Moore was third at 2:04.88.

In field events, Michael Rawlings won the javelin throw with a mark of 43.18 meters, while Will Richardson was second at 40.54 meters. Rawlings then placed third in the shot put at 10.34 meters.

On the women's side, Maggie Henry and S.K. Lipperd had first place runs for the Scots. Henry won the 1500-meter with a time of 5:02.32, while Mattie Parker was second at 5:04.49. Lipperd took medalist honors in the 800-meter event at 2:21.91.

The Scots set three program records in women's events. Maddie Mitchell had a pair of records as she broke her own mark in the discus with a throw of 28.59 meters and then topped her shot put record with a mark of 9.01 meters. Anna Baker also bested her own program record in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 18.01 that placed her second.

Anna Walter had a Covenant season-best time of 29.78 in the 200-meter run that placed her fourth in the event. Emily Brauer was second in the 400-meter with a time of 1:04.52, while Walter was fourth at 1:07.85.

In the 3,000-meter, Lydia Dorman was the top Scot finisher as she came in third at 11:55.64.

Covenant will compete in the USA South Championships on April 28-29 in Berea, Ky.
