Betty “Jean” Toney, 76, passed away to her heavenly home on Wednesday, January 19, 2022, at her residence surrounded by loved ones.

Affectionately known as “Jean”, she was an exceptional wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, friend, and bonus mom to several people. She was a faithful member of Greater Nazarene Missionary Baptist Church and attended Mount Canaan Baptist Church, until her health began to decline. Jean was a faithful servant of Jesus Christ and a prayer warrior throughout her life. She attended Howard High School where she was a proud Hustling Tiger class of 1964. Jean’s loving husband took excellent care of her until his passing. Her radiant smile would bring joy and laughter to all she met. She would quickly tell anyone that “God has been good to me.” Betty Jean worked numerous years for Shaw Industries until her retirement. Upon retirement she proudly volunteered as “Granny on call” a teacher aide for her granddaughter classroom. She enjoyed working in her yard, singing in the choir, spending time with her family, and she was an exceptional cook. Her home cooked meals and home were open to everyone.

Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Cleveland S. Toney; parents, David and Edna Mae Lyle, Sr.; brothers, Clifford and Lester Lyle and James Brown; nephews, Dennis Lyle, LeDale Lyle, and Reginald Lyle; and beloved niece, Leslee R. Phillips.

Survivors include her loving family, children, Pastor Hosea (Paula) Blackwell of Jacksonville FL, Thomas (Erica) Blackwell of Columbia SC, Tammie Chappell, Jennifer (William) Lansden, Frank Blackwell, Jr., and stepson, Kevin Toney, all of Chattanooga TN; grandchildren, Asia Blackwell, Destinee Lansden, Ebone’ Chappell, McKenzie Blackwell, and Deyonna Lansden; brothers, David (Wanda) Lyle and Judge (Joyce) Lyle; sisters, Yvonne Bryant and Airine Butts.

We would like to express our gratitude of thanks to the Alzheimer’s Association, Hospice of Chattanooga, and everyone who extended love, care, and compassion for our mother as she bravely fought Alzheimer’s Disease, “The longest Goodbye.”  To God be the Glory for her legacy.

Betty Jean will lie in state on Sunday, Jan. 30, from 12:30-5 p.m. at Taylor Funeral Home.

Homegoing service will be on Monday, Jan. 31, at noon in the chapel with Pastor Maurice Gilchrist as the Eulogist and Dr. Ternae T. Jordan, Sr. as the officiant.

Interment will follow in Chattanooga National Cemetery.
