"Not only our wrestling fans, but also football fans, alumni, casual sports fans...it allows them to walk up to the mat and see our guys compete and hopefully get them to our matches as well."

As alluded above, that’s not the only piece of news breaking on a Thursday afternoon. The Southern Conference released the 2022-23 Preseason Coaches Poll. It appears the league mat leaders are expecting a photo finish.

“We were just looking at it this morning and it's gonna be a battle (for the title),” Ruschell added. "I like how our group has bonded together over this short period of time. They're holding each other accountable to the team goal, which is not just SoCon, but national level stuff. I think the transfers really helped set that tone in taking us to another level and made our team solid in each weight class.

"Now it's just to go out there and do it."

The season officially begins on November 5 in Jacksonville, Fla. The Battle in the River City features matches against Wisconsin, Little Rock and Buffalo. The first home match is Dec. 10 when the Iowa Hawkeyes come to the Scenic City. That match is part of a doubleheader with the men’s basketball team in McKenzie Arena with the wrestlers taking over in prime time.
