Phyllis Winston McCoy, 81, longtime educator and friend, went peacefully to be with the Lord on July 5, 2022.

 

She was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, on September 11, 1941. She was a member of Tyner United Methodist. Phyllis served proudly as a teacher in the public education system for 34 years.

 

Upon her retirement, Phyllis joined the staff of Silverdale Baptist Academy, a group which became an extended family. She took tremendous pride in her school and the success of her students; her passion for learning impacted thousands of children’s lives over the years.

 

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, John L. McCoy, with whom she spent 52 years.

 

She is survived by her children, Joanie (Chris) Davis and Philip (Dianna) McCoy; her Grandchildren, Blake (Suzana) Davis, Zach (Stevie) Schulz, Cullen (Abby) McCoy, Sarah (Barry) Stutheit, and Amber (James) Craven; great grandchildren, Adeline Gilley, Eliza Schulz and Xavier Stutheit.

 

Phyllis was a member of “Supper Club” for 55 years and loved her “chosen” brothers and sisters, as well as their children, who brought her so many years of joy.

 

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 6, from 4-8 p.m., and prior to the service on Thursday, July 7,  from 9-11 a.m. at Heritage Funeral Home, 7454 E. Brainerd Road.

 

A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 7, in the funeral home chapel with Pastor David Thompson officiating. Interment will follow in Lakewood Memory Gardens, South.
