Lee University Professor Dr. Mike Iosia, along with three Lee students, presented at the Southeast American College of Sports Medicine. The event took place in Greenville, S.C.

The 2024 Annual Meeting featured 470 presentations and welcomed more than 1,150 attendees, including over 380 professionals. Lee student presenters included Jordan Blair, Jessikah Brown, and Kathryn Franco. With Dr. Iosia, the students created a 50-minute presentation, which they presented on the first day to professors, students, and professionals in sports medicine about the experiential learning of Dr. Iosia’s class Exercise Physiology 1.

“The challenge for this class was to come up with experiences that were associated with content and to have students engage with it in a way that involves people, caring, and learning how to learn, which is part of Dee Finks Taxonomy on Creating Significant Learning Experiences,” said Dr. Iosia.

Students wore heart monitors and performed workouts to provide learning that connects with the content from the classroom. Dr. Iosia presented on the learning and teaching aspects while the students shared their experience in the class and their research from the heart rate monitors.

According to Ms. Franco their presentation went well, and they received high praise from multiple professors and professionals who sat in on the session.

“I really enjoyed the class last spring,” said Ms. Franco. “I thought the model was effective and well done, so I was excited to share my experience with others.”

Dr. Iosia joined Lee’s Department of Health, Exercise Science, and Secondary Education in the fall of 2007. Prior to Lee, he spent nine years as a strength and conditioning coach at the NCAA Division IA level. He had coaching stops at the University of Southern Mississippi, Auburn University, and Tulane University.
