A 17-year-old Baylor School student was killed in a traffic accident inside the city limits of Trenton, Ga., Wednesday evening.

Trenton Police Chief Roger Castleberry said the victim was Christopher Johnson Bryant, of Wildwood, Ga.

He played on the Baylor varsity football team.

The wreck occurred on Highway 11 north of the Trenton business district. It was just past Shaw Industries.

Chief Castleberry said the young man had just left Ingle's grocery.

He said he was driving a 2000 Ford king cab truck in the 7:35 p.m. incident.

Chief Castleberry said the vehicle went off the road at an embankment and traveled 161 feet before striking a tree head-on. He said there was no sign of braking.

The victim was wearing a seatbelt and the air bags deployed, but he died at the scene.

No one witnessed the accident, but people inside a nearby house heard it occur.

The accident is still under investigation, Chief Castleberry said.

The body is at Wann Funeral Home in St. Elmo. There is no visitation.

Funeral services will be Friday at 3:30 p.m. at the Alumni Chapel at Baylor.

In lieu of flowers, a Christopher Johnson Bryant Memorial Fund has been set up at Baylor. The address is Box 1337, Chattanooga, Tn., 37401.

Survivors are parents, Toy Johnson Bryant and Chris and Susan Bryant; sister, Patsy Toy Bryant; brother, Stuart Bryant; step-sister, Kate Brennan; grandfather, C.V.
