Amanda Addinall
Lee University juniors Amanda Addinall and Carmen Busse have each been presented with the Payne Scholarship.
Presented to two young women annually, the Payne Scholarship was established in memory of the late Carolyn Payne, a close family friend of Lee President Paul Conn and his wife Darlia. Funds for the annual scholarship have been provided by members of the Payne family since 1989.
Candidates are students entering their junior year, who are nominated by a professor and then selected by a scholarship committee.
Criteria for the award include leadership, campus involvement, broadly based student achievement, and service to others.
Ms. Addinall is an interdisciplinary studies major from Dale City, Va. Her campus activities include Voices of Lee and the Greek club Delta Zeta Tau.
"I am very grateful to have this scholarship," said Ms. Addinall. "Both my younger brother and I attend Lee, so receiving the Payne scholarship was such a blessing to me and my family."
"I knew Carolyn Payne," said Danny Murray, director of Voices of Lee. "She was a charming, highly motivated woman. Amanda is the perfect person to follow that legacy."
Ms. Busse is a pastoral ministries major from Calgary, Alberta. She is a resident assistant in Sharp Hall and takes part in the Women's Round Table in the School of Religion.
For financial reasons, Ms. Busse was questioning whether God wanted her to be here at Lee. "I was in awe to be considered for a scholarship with such an amazing woman behind it and because my God provided for me," said Ms. Busse.
"Carmen is a very articulate, bright and ministry-minded young woman," said Tom Doolittle, associate professor of Pastoral Ministry. "Her insight and maturity exceeds her age. She is an excellent student who will develop into an outstanding ministry leader."
